I just arrived in Tainan, Taiwan! It feels so great to be back! I love it here!! I’m staying with a French oceanographer in a really cool part of town with lots of temples and coffee shops. The plan for today was to go on this sightseeing tour of Tainan, organized by some company, especially for foreigners new to Tainan. The tour started out at the Grandmother Temple. Temple for the godess of the ocean, who helped saved Taiwan a long long time ago. We got there and the first part was mostly in Taiwanese. Some hosts were explaining the agenda of the day, which was a re-enactment of a traditional Taiwanese marriage. The hosts were going to introduce us to four different gods of Taiwan culture who can help bring love into our lives.
There was a lovely quote on a display board translated as “First we must make room for ourselves. Only for ourselves. Then, we can begin to love others. We don’t know when it will be, who it will be, where it will be. We just hold the place in our hearts for love. Someone who fits the place might never come, but holding the place, that is love.”
Our guide took us on a tour of the temple, explaining what each god was for. When our host asked if anyone wanted to ask the gods about their future love, I volunteered! I threw the wooden blocks (praying as hard as I ever could) and got a “positive” result! (one face up, one face down) on the first throw! Because I got the positive result, I got to take a little red string to keep with me all the time. When one day I wake up and I can’t find the string, that means soon I will find my love! YAY!
It was a great first day out in Tainan.
